Kingston, ON: Inspired by astonishing 32,000 year-old paintings recently discovered in Southern France, Multi-Juno award winner and Steinway Piano Artist, David Braid brings home his internationally acclaimed concert programme, “Chauvet” on a coast-to-coast tour of Canada. Joining Braid and making their first appearance in Canada, is the incomparable “Epoque String Quartet”, the Czech Republic’s top proponent of an "old-world" string quartet meeting "new-world" contemporary music.

This concert program has surprised and thrilled by “getting under the skin" of audiences through highly sensual compositions driven by narrative and passion that aims to make original art music accessible to the mainstream.

Following a recent premier in the UK, a young audience member wrote, “there were times I was so transfixed I forgot to breathe.”

Described by Paris-Transatlantic Magazine as “refreshingly uncategorizable”, Braid’s compositions are full of unexpected turns governed by structure – a musical characteristic that may have inspired the Halifax Chronicle-Herald to write, “If Mozart played jazz, he’d be David Braid.”

Available at this performance only are pre-release copies of their anticipated recording, FLOW, to be released later in 2016 on the Steinway & Sons Record Label. Mixed and mastered in the United States by Multi-Grammy award winning engineer, Dixon Van Winkle, it will be released in digital formats, 12” Vinyl LP, and CD. The cover art features the stunning oil painting Qi by Sophia Gao, great-great granddaughter of Xu Yefen, one of "The Eight Grandmasters" of Qing Dynasty art. The liner notes are written by Dr Lee Tsang, Managing and Artistic Director of Sinfonia UK Collective and Lecturer in Music at University of Hull, UK.

Program

1. Joya is a viscerally exciting work that uses a filmic template of surprise to mould and develop its musical ideas. The piece deconstructs traditional notions of the ‘Theme and Variations’ form.

2. Chauvet http://davidbraid.com/downloads/About_Chauvet-English_Version.pdf

3. Semi unfolds with a nostalgic sense of landscape and shifts between images of hope and tragedy. Jazz-inflected gestures drawn from musical Classicism and Romanticism infuse the work’s improvisations and lead us gently towards a long-awaited resolution.

4. Spirit Dance is a joyful, witty celebration of Canadian cultural and ethnic diversity, full of sharp contrasts, from a whirling dervish to the rhythms of Brazilian dance and Métis folk music. An ‘international’ scale drawn from scales associated with various ethnicities conveys various connections within society’s cultural mosaic.

5. Epilogue is a highly enigmatic, contemplative piece about Time. Strings provide a haunting, edgy quality that evokes a sense of ancient time whilst piano improvisations, Bach-ian in their gestures, conjure up the spirit of Glenn Gould.
